Dr Phillip Rutherford is a composer, lecturer, teacher, performer, and conductor. Phillip has over 20 years’ experience teaching all aspects of music history, theory and composition at various levels from Tertiary down to Primary education. Phillip taught at the Australian Institute of Music from 2010 to 2018, lecturing in various areas of the history of Western Art Music, as well as music theory and ear training.
Phillip has also taught at Central Coast Conservatorium of Music for 22 years, teaching music theory, history, brass, composition and conducting. Phillip has designed and written a series of books as a new comprehensive Musicianship course, The Poco Musician. Phillip has worked as a conductor of a number of bands and orchestras around NSW, and also as a performer in some of Australia’s leading community ensembles. Phillip’s compositions have been performed across the country. Phillip has composed works for band, symphony orchestra, opera, chamber music and solo instruments.
Phillip received his PhD and Master of Music (Composition) at Sydney Conservatorium of Music, and received his Bachelor of Music at Newcastle Conservatorium.
